Methodology & sources

How Hanta Hub sources, verifies, and updates its tracker on the 2026 MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak — the source hierarchy, the daily refresh cycle, case-definition rules, conflict-of-data resolution, and corrections policy.

Quick summary. Every figure on this site comes from a primary source — WHO, ECDC, CDC, Africa CDC, NICD, or a national health ministry. We update once per 24 hours via an automated daily refresh, plus ad-hoc updates when a primary source publishes new data outside the cycle.

Source hierarchy

When two primary sources disagree on a figure, we resolve in the following order:

  1. WHO Disease Outbreak News (DON). The most authoritative count for the multi-country MV Hondius cluster. As of writing, DON599 (4 May), DON600 (9 May), and DON601 (13 May 2026) are the canonical reference reports.
  2. ECDC Andes hantavirus daily update. Most up-to-date daily snapshot for the European cohort; usually matches WHO once any new cases are formally classified.
  3. CDC Health Alert Network (HAN) advisory + situation summary. The authoritative source for the US cohort, including the National Quarantine Unit and Emory transfers.
  4. Africa CDC statements. Lead source for Cape Verde, South Africa, and continental coordination.
  5. National reference laboratory and health-ministry statements (NICD South Africa, Spanish CCAES, French DGS, Dutch RIVM, UKHSA, RKI Germany, Geneva HUG laboratory). Primary for individual country case detail.
  6. Tier-1 wire reporting (NPR, AP, Reuters, AFP, BBC, Al Jazeera, STAT, Live Science, CIDRAP). Useful for clinical detail and quotes; never the sole basis for a case-count number.

What we consider a "case"

ClassificationOur definition (matches WHO DON601)
ConfirmedPCR-confirmed Andes virus by a national reference laboratory or equivalent. Used in our headline confirmed-count.
ProbableCompatible clinical syndrome + close-contact epidemiological link + IgM positive or other supportive serology, without a confirmatory PCR.
InconclusiveInitial positive PCR or serology that has not been corroborated on follow-up testing. Held in this category pending repeat testing.
Suspected (excluded)Compatible syndrome alone, no laboratory or epidemiological corroboration. We do not include suspected-only cases in our headline counts.

Deaths follow the same hierarchy: a death is "confirmed" if the underlying case was PCR-confirmed, and "probable" if the case was probable. We report both in disaggregated form in the open data feed at /data/cases.json.

Refresh cadence

The site refreshes through three mechanisms:

Geographic scope

The tracker focuses on (a) the 2026 MV Hondius cluster — currently the only active multi-country hantavirus outbreak — and (b) endemic baseline data for the regions where hantavirus circulates: Argentina and Chile (Andes virus), the southwestern United States (Sin Nombre virus), Northern Europe (Puumala/Dobrava), and East Asia (Hantaan/Seoul). We do not duplicate the surveillance work of national systems for endemic cases; we link to those sources instead.

Editorial principles

Affiliate disclosure

Hanta Hub includes Amazon-affiliate links to a small set of recommended preparedness products (N95 respirators, nitrile gloves, EPA-approved disinfectant, pulse oximeters, etc.). These products are selected on the basis of CDC, NIOSH, and WHO guidance for hantavirus cleanup, not on commercial criteria. We earn a small commission on qualifying purchases through these links; this commission does not influence editorial decisions or the case-count figures.

Corrections policy

We correct errors of fact as quickly as we can verify them. If you spot one, email press@hantavirussupplies.com with the page URL and the source supporting your correction. Substantive corrections are flagged in the next blog post; minor corrections (typos, link errors) are made silently.

Independence

Hanta Hub is an independent project run by Michael Jacobs. It is not affiliated with any health authority, news outlet, or pharmaceutical company, and no compensation or material benefit is received from any of the sources cited. The site's only revenue is Amazon-affiliate commission on the preparedness products listed in the Hub section.
